So grab a cuppa tea and meet Nikki...
What is your favorite curiosity/passion?
Love. And this exploration of love changes with experience and growth certainly but yes I am so endlessly curious and passionate about love in its myriad of manifestations especially through consideration for future generations and a recognition of our ancestors. That we are not just in the now and folks who move through the world with this consciousness, who are actively working towards loving and healing and teaching and listening and aligning with movements that are about love for the people, is where my heart is.
When you speak, what do you want the world to hear you say?
Trust your gut. it is there to warn you for your own physical and psychic good, not against.
And make art!!
And love each other!!
What is love to you?
Love to me is completion. Nayyirah Waheed wrote a poem that says A friend is someone who supports your breath. I think love does this too. Love is the friend, the breath and the oxygen or as KRS-1 calls oxygen, - Consciousness or God.
It is the agape and the eros. It is greater than romance. It is so much more than these words in English. It is a language I have yet to speak but know in my heart and in the burning fire in my fingers.
Who or what in your life inspires you to live from your Highest Self?
Oh my, the many poets I've met or known in my life whether in person or through their work; Suheir Hammad, Nikki Giovanni, Sonia Sanchez, Tupac, my grandmother, anyone I've met who is living in their integrity and it shows, my yoga teachers, the ocean, the act of waiting for passion/lilikoi fruit to ripen and fall off the vine was a great teacher for me in patience, the homeless man I met at 15 who changed my life! My relationships come and gone and the lessons oooh man the lessons... so many things. Life. Breathe. Youth! Music. Art. The idea of family and motherhood. Just waking up in the morning and giving thanks for my working limbs and eyesight!!
What are your current manifestation dreams?
Currently, I am in week one of my one year intensive Masters of Arts in Teaching - Art Program here in Portland. So I am manifesting a Masters in Teaching at this moment while balancing my art making and yoga practice which is vital to my well-being. I am also moving soon to a new home space so I am in the midst of manifesting a beloved home space / art studio space for this year of study. When this year ends, I am hoping to either relocate back to the Hawaiian islands where my heart lives or to step out internationally and move somewhere new altogether, learn fluent Spanish, work on my art and either join or start an arts-based education curriculum for students of color and other teachers. I am also manifesting an amazing partner to join me in this earth walk in life. I feel it coming and I'm excited.
What is at least one way (you can offer more than one) that you live in alignment/union with Mother Earth?
I try to eat the fruits and veggies that are in time with the season. I honor my body’s needs and am less and less apologetic the older I get. There is so much more I could be doing honestly, but I'm on my way. There's a great book I read last year called The Hood Health Handbook: A Practical Guide to Health and Wellness in the Urban Community. I read it in two days. It really helped me see all my blind spots and where I need to step up as a woman who lives in the city grind life for now. I need to pick that up again and read it.
